PROMPT is an acronym that stands for Prompts for Restructuring Oral Muscular Phonetic Targets. PROMPT has been proven to be very beneficial in speech therapy especially for Apraxia of Speech and other motor speech disorders. PROMPT is a tactile-kinesthetic approach which involves touch cues to the patient’s articulators. The speech-language pathologist uses touch to manually guide the patient through the production of a target sound, syllable, word, phrase, or sentence. This technique incorporates visual, auditory and tactile modalities which allows patients to feel where their articulators should be for correct productions. PROMPT also helps reduce unnecessary muscle movements such as jaw sliding or inadequate lip rounding. So now let's move on to the 5 benefits of PROMPT therapy:
PROMPT is evidence-based.
This means there has been a wide range of research on this technique to test the benefits and methods on patients. The research that has been done on PROMPT shows that it is a highly successful approach to use on a wide range of speech disorders.
PROMPT is effective for children and adults.
PROMPT can be useful for individuals of any age who are demonstrating motor speech, articulation, dysarthria, and/or phonological difficulties such as those in Apraxia of Speech, Dysarthria, and Aphasia. Due to the nature of PROMPT techniques, they are useful for a wide range of disorders and ages.
PROMPT is a multisensory approach.
Typically during speech therapy sessions the child will be able to see and hear the productions of target words through provider models. With PROMPT, the child gets the added benefit of touch (tactile) input. This added sensory approach may greatly aid children in the therapy process. The PROMPT method can serve as an aid when learning where sounds go, as well as quick reminders of placement when working on sentences and longer phrases.
PROMPT may work when traditional speech therapy techniques have not.
Because of the added sensation of touch, individuals receiving PROMPT are often excited and surprised to see how well PROMPT works to target speech skills.
PROMPT focuses on meaningful word targets.
This means the individuals receiving therapy are more connected to what they are learning and have more motivation during therapy. For example, imagine you struggle with pronouncing /r/ correctly and your name is Rory or Roger. With the PROMPT technique, we work won’t just target the /r/ sound in random words or sentences we would target your name! This way when you are meeting someone new and they ask your name you will feel confident telling them.
There are many more benefits to PROMPT therapy but we just wanted to give you the highlights. We would love to speak with you more about PROMPT and help you decide if PROMPT therapy techniques are right for you or your loved one.
